![]() ![]() While I briefly considered other tools, like Google Slides or PowerPoint, using LaTeX allowed me to easily separate the styling from my content and create my own theme that I could reuse for all future presentations at Lucid. You can check the theme out on GitHub: Beamer-Theme-Execushares where I encourage you to use and abuse it to your heart’s content. When I was tasked with creating a presentation to share with my co-workers at our weekly tech talk, I chose to use LaTeX. It certainly has something to do with Beamer’s margins, but I haven’t looked too deeply into it and using the negative numbers doesn’t bother me at all.Īnd there you have it! A fully functioning, nice-looking Beamer template in 183 lines and half an hour. ![]() One thing of note here is that instead of the bottom left corner of the slide being at (0cm, 0cm) like we were using for the backgrounds, the bottom-left of the slide is at (-1cm, 0cm) for this template. ![]() Then I just draw the red rectangle through the middle of the slide and plop the section title text on top of it. ![]() Super duper hacky, but it gets the job done. The easiest way to do that is to draw the background colour overtop of it. Since I’ve already draw the frame title at the top of the slide, I need to get rid of it. We then proceed to define what that section page looks like. What this does is just before every single \section command in the document, it will insert a section page slide. % use tikz to draw everything % it may not be the best, but it's easy to work with % and looks good % TODO: base title slide and contents slide on something other than slide numbers :/ \setbeamertemplate We can start off our sample file like so: We also want to use custom fonts, so for that I’m going to use XeLaTeX. Since we want the theme to be called “Execushares”, the file must be named beamerthemeExecushares.sty, and we should put it in the same file as the main. sty files, so we can go ahead and create a new. Otherwise, let’s dig in!įirst things first, realize that Beamer “themes” are pretty much just. If you just want to grab the theme now without taking a look into how it was made, you can check it out on Github. I think I did OK, as you can see by some sample shots: The title slide The table of contents A section "introduction" slide A typical slide I really love the colour theme that I’m using now on this site (found on Adobe Kuler: “Some Kind Of Execushares” by pickton), so I decided to make a simple and “modern” theme using those colours. I also want my presentation to look good, and none of the default beamer themes nor any others I could find online did that for me. Thankfully, Beamer themes are very easy to create from scratch!įor my thesis defence, I wanted to use LaTeX to beautifully typeset the technical content of my work. One thing I’ve always been hesitant to use LaTeX for is presentations - the main LaTeX package for making presentations is Beamer, and although it is extremely functional, I am firmly of the opinion that all the default themes are butt ugly and there are barely any other themes out there. A lot of people don’t understand why, but that’s a discussion for another time. I love LaTeX for typesetting all my documents. Better Beamer Themes Kenton Hamaluik Better Beamer Themes () ![]()
